How to Place Your First Buy Order, Step by Step

The account is open and funded; only the first order is left. We will go through the order screen field by field, on an invented screen similar to broker apps, and see what to check before you press send.

What you will learn

  • Know what each field on the order screen means.
  • Work out the order value yourself before sending.
  • Follow the order after sending and confirm the shares arrived.

Before you open the screen

Settle three things: the stock by its ticker, not just its name; the amount you will put in; and that your available buying balance covers it, charges included.

Review and send
An invented order screen before sending. Company and figures are for illustration only.
  1. StockType the ticker and make sure the name shown is the company you mean.
  2. SideBuy. Mixing up buy and sell happens more than you would think, so look twice.
  3. QuantityThe number of shares, not the amount in EGP.
  4. Order typeYou pick from the types your firm offers, such as a market order or a limit order. Ask your firm what it offers; the difference has its own lesson in the trading path.
  5. PriceYou enter it for a limit order: the most you are willing to pay per share.
  6. ReviewCheck the estimated value and the charges, then send.
Example150 shares × 10.20 = EGP 1,530, before commission and charges. Slip an extra zero and type 1,500 shares, and the order becomes EGP 15,300. That is why you check quantity and value before pressing.
Watch outThe value on screen is an estimate. The price your order fills at can differ from the last price shown; the bid and ask lesson covers why. Ask your firm how charges are worked out on each order.

After you press send

Open the orders list in the app. The order may still be waiting, partly filled, or fully filled. While the order is still open, you can ask to cancel the part that has not filled yet, depending on your brokerage firm's system.

After settlement, to be sure the shares are really yours, you can follow your balances and executed operations through MCDR's inquiry services with your unified code. If the balance is missing, request a movement statement for that stock.

Look at the stock before the order

Before any order, open the stock page and read the price and the order book, so you know where the numbers you type come from.

Check yourself

1. 200 shares at 5.50. Estimated value before charges?

200 × 5.50 = EGP 1,100.

2. What does the Quantity field mean?

Quantity is shares; value = quantity × price.

3. Your order shows partly filled. What does that mean?

Some shares filled; the rest waits for a seller.

Summary

  • Pick the stock by ticker and confirm your balance first.
  • Check side, quantity and estimated value, with charges on top.
  • After sending, follow the status, and after settlement confirm the shares at MCDR.
